MITF gene

MITF gene

The MITF gene codes for a protein that plays a large role in cells that produce pigment in skin and eyes.  However, when the there is a mutation in the gene, the protein cannot function properly.  Mutations in MITF gene increase risk for melanoma (skin cancer) and kidney cancer.   This is inherited in an autosomal dominant manner, meaning each first degree relative (parent, child, and sibling) of an individual with this condition has a 50% chance of inheriting the disease causing mutation.
