The MET gene codes for a cellular receptor for a growth factor. Mutations in this gene cause Hereditary Papillary Renal Carcinoma (HPRC). HPRC increases risk for kidney cancer. Most individuals with the condition will develop a kidney tumor at some point in their life. This condition is inherited in an autosomal dominant manner, meaning each first degree relative (parent, child, and sibling) of an individual with this condition has a 50% chance of inheriting the disease causing mutation.
